Honey Clough is located in
the Gamtoos Valley and borders the Baviaanskloof World Heritage site. Nature and agriculture
come together perfectly and the area is breathtakingly beautiful with steep
mountains, deep ravines and many indigenous animal, bird and plant species.
With fresh air, the ideal climate of the Kloof and pristine water from the Kleinrivier, conditions are ideal for producing high quality
citrus fruit late in the season.
Only ten percent of the total farm can be used for agriculture because of the rugged terrain. The rest is covered by indiginous forest. This coupled with the low impact farming practices gives us a very low carbon footprint.
We strive to be as nature friendly as possible in our farming practices. No harsh chemicals or herbicides have been used since 1997. Weeds and grass in the orchards are cut mechanically and left under the trees. Apart from cooling down the roots and soil around the trees and improving water retention, this produces organic material that is put back into the soil, creating a healthy environment for the predators of pests.
We can see the difference in nature with the significant increase in indiginous animals like frogs and birds aswell as insect life. Raptor number have increased and includes the crowned eagle and the common buzzard. After an absense of more that ten years Guineau Fowl have also returned to the area.
